70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 23/6/2018

70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - UDHR & the International Bill of Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected, was adopted by the United Nations 70 years ago as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations.

The UDHR has now been in place for 70 years. However, how well do people in Hong Kong know about the UDHR? It has inspired the adoption of the International Bill of Human Rights - The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, both of which are referred to in our Basic Law. On the other hand, how well has the Hong Kong government promoted the UDHR and the two International Covenants and complied with these human rights requirements? We are honoured to have Professor Johannes Chan, who has been defending human rights for years, to share his thoughts with us, and to discuss with the audience how important the UDHR and the two international Covenants are to Hong Kong, as well as to the international community today.
