http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/mar/25/history-channel-the-bible-series-is-reality-tv"The scriptures according to basic cable make a mockery of history and religion."
"Bible scholars have made deeper criticisms, including the "whitewashed" cast, the marginalized role of women, and an aversion to unpleasant details so strong that the show ultimately
misrepresents the Bible."
"The producers pre-screened the show to religious leaders, picking up endorsements from mega-church pastors Rick Warren and Joel Osteen and a "partnership" with the World Evangelical Alliance. Christian dating sites jumped on board, and even Walmart has aggressively promoted the show.
All this for a readymade audience.
...the producers...erased all the personality and depth of the source, not to mention heart or wit. ...The result amounts to little more than an
exploitation of faith."
Alex's comment: The producers claimed that the series is their "calling" to alleviate "Bible illiteracy". But, by distorting the Bible through emphasis on highly selective minute portions which are familiar with conservative believers (target viewers/consumers) and downplaying on many other portions which might make them feel unease, the ironic result is precisely the preservation, even endorsement and hence promotion, of illiteracy of the true whole picture of Bible.
