Date:
Oct 9, 2010 (Saturday)
Time:
10:45 am - 12:00 noon
Venue: Small chapel, 4/F, Theology Building
Topic: Church of the East: History, Mission, and Inculturation
Speaker: His Grace Mar Awa, Bishop of California, Assyrian Church of the East (Visiting Scholar, Institute of Sino-Christian Studies)
Background: The first wave of Christian missionaries to China was from the Church of the East, which has been known as Jingjiao (景教) in China since the 7th century. East Syrian in church tradition and Persian in geopolitical origin, the Church of the East was the world's largest Christian church in terms of geographical extent between the 9th and 14th centuries, stretching from the Mediterranean, Mesopotamia to India and China. The issue of inculturation of Christianity in various cultures became an important concern for the church. The Assyrian church of the East (亞述東方教會) is a direct descendent of the Church of the East. Its members exist in greatest numbers in Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Lebanon, and also in Europe, North America, Australia, and India.
