Evolution and the Emergent Self (book by Raymond Neubauer)

...I acquired and began reading Evolution and the Emergent Self by Raymond Neubauer. In one place, for example, he writes about four animal groups (of which we humans are one) sharing "many qualities in common, such as complex communication and social organization, tool use, imitation, insight learning, and mirror self-recognition. [He describes] this overall as an emergent self, able to view itself, conspecifics, and the environment with higher objectivity." This is an essential part of what I expect can be an empirical foundation for humanism.
