Derek Murphy is an ex-seminary student from Portland, Oregon whose interest in Christian history began while studying theology, philosophy and classical languages on the Mediterranean island of Malta. His passion for religious history has led him to spiritual centers, ruins and temples in over 30 countries, where he's participated in authentic religious rituals with local shamans, witch-doctors, priests and monks. He's backpacked through Europe, played polo on the plains of Argentina, explored unexcavated tombs in Egypt, studied oil painting in Florence, climbed through the fallen pillars of Angkor Wat... |
More than just a Jesus Christ/Harry Potter analysis
April 27, 2011 By Brian Hines (Salem, OR USA) I'm impressed. A lot. I figured that Jesus Potter Harry Christ would focus on the commonalities between Jesus Christ and Harry Potter, but Murphy's aims are a lot more ambitious. And interesting. In a highly readable yet semi-scholarly style, he sets out to examine the origins and evolution of Christianity, seeking evidence for a historical Jesus who is akin to the mythical figure revered by believers today. While unreal in an objective sense, Murphy demonstrates that the myths told in the New Testament and the Harry Potter series can point to personal truths that offer comfort, solace, and courage to anyone (which, really, is everyone) seeking to live life more fully, happily, and boldly. http://www.amazon.com/dp/0615430937 新約聖經和哈利波特系列都是神仙故事,兩者都不是客觀地真實,卻能指向個人「真理」,為所有找尋更充實、愉快、自信生命的讀者帶來安慰與勇氣。 |

Tom Rees Well, I've just been reading Jesus Potter Harry Christ (don't be put off by the title! It isn't sensationalist and is actually rather scholarly). It's quite a fascinating book--one of those books that takes the facts you already know (at least in broad terms) and presents them viewed through a different lens... So it's a book well worth reading and, courtesy of the author (Derek Murphy), I have three copies to give away! To find out how you can win one, scroll to the end of the post. Before you do that, though, you might want to learn a little more about the book. I fired off some questions to Derek ideas and how they came to him. Here are his answers--they'll give you a flavour of what the book is all about. What's the basic premise of your book? What first interested you in the Jesus myth? How do you go about creating a god? Are all Eurasian mythologies underpinned by a single cosmic archetype? What are the similarities between the the Roman and Greek mysteries and the Jesus myth--and how do we know which direction the influence went? Tell us about the schisms in the early Church Why did the 'Jesus is real' faction win out? |

another book by the same author Product Description "Jesus Didn't Exist!" proves that the figure of Jesus Christ is a remnant of an ancient spiritual mythology; a sacred symbol which was accidentally mistaken for a historical person. It describes in detail how the gospel story, including the death and resurrection of Jesus, was stolen directly from earlier sun-cults. It also uncovers the original philosophy of salvation behind Christian symbolism, and is full of quotes from early Christians who clearly worshiped Jesus as a mythological being rather than a historical man. Paperback: 160 pages Publisher: Holy Blasphemy (June 18, 2006) ISBN-10: 1411658787 ISBN-13: 978-1411658783 |
