The
latest Gallup poll is indicative of the decline in belief in God especially among the youth. Down to 84% in the 18 to 29 year old group and 92% overall. More important I think we are seeing a predictable transition period where if one ask if they belief in God or a "universal spirit" the breakdown is 80% in a personal God and 12% for a universal spirit. The latter "fuzzy theist" category I think we are seeing a temporary stand as people move to a full non-theism. More important this category is more a trend led by the baby boomers, Oprah, new age etc and will fade with time.
Bottom line: We are seeing the US move toward the European model especially among the youth. 20% are functionally Atheists in the US.
