Pope Francis made some ears perk up today during his homily by saying that even atheists have salvation through their good deeds.

In a story he told of a Catholic having a conversation with a priest, the Pope made clear that salvation is found through good deeds, not belief in Christ.

Of course, this is nothing new to Christianity. Anyone who has read the New Testament knows that Jesus gave himself for the sins of all, not just some. ...

...by embracing everyone and refraining from demonizing atheists or chastising non-Catholics, the Pope may be on the right track toward delivering more believers to a Church that many, even some Catholics, have, thus far, seen as outdated.

True Matthew, but the question is what is meant by that. Maybe it isn't just enough to "believe". Maybe it is much deeper, more mystical - Jesus is saying the kingdom is within, we have to love as he/He loved, and follow his/His path in life, as much as we can. He surrounded himself with all the people that society rejected (tax collectors, prostitutes, poor fishermen, no doubt a few gay men in that crowd too). He preached such a radical path, most churches/conservatives/governments today don't follow it at all, and if he/He were here then I think he/He would be overthrowing the money changers tables in the temple again and challenging the status quo. Most churches today seem more like the Pharisees and Sadducees to me than a genuine path to God.

Alex's comment:  This is Universalism.  The new Pope is a Universalist.
