The Public Charter

The Sunday Assembly is a godless congregation that celebrate life.
Our motto: live better, help often, wonder more.
Our mission: to help everyone find and fulfill their full potential.
Our vision: a godless congregation in every town, city and village that wants one.

We are here for everyone who wants to:

Live Better. We aim to provide inspiring, thought-provoking and practical ideas that help people to live the lives they want to lead and be the people they want to be

Help Often. Assemblies are communities of action building lives of purpose, encouraging us all to help anyone who needs it to support each other

Wonder More. Hearing talks, singing as one, listening to readings and even playing games helps us to connect with each other and the awesome world we live in.

The Sunday Assembly

1  Is 100% celebration of life. We are born from nothing and go to nothing. Let’s enjoy it together.
2  Has no doctrine. We have no set texts so we can make use of wisdom from all sources.
3  Has no deity. We don’t do supernatural but we also won’t tell you you’re wrong if you do.
4  Is radically inclusive. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their beliefs – this is a place of love that is open and accepting.
5  Is free to attend, not-for-profit and volunteer run. We ask for donations to cover our costs and support our community work.
6  Has a community mission. Through our Action Heroes (you!), we will be a force for good.
7  Is independent. We do not accept sponsorship or promote outside businesses, organisations or services
8  Is here to stay. With your involvement, The Sunday Assembly will make the world a better place
9  We won’t won’t tell you how to live, but will try to help you do it as well as you can
10  And remember point 1… The Sunday Assembly is a celebration of the one life we know we have

What should you expect from a Sunday Assembly event?

Just by being with us you should be energised, vitalised, restored, repaired, refreshed and recharged. No matter what the subject of the Assembly, it will solace worries, provoke kindness and inject a touch of transcendence into the everyday.

But life can be tough… It is. Sometimes bad things happen to good people, we have moments of weakness or life just isn’t fair. We want The Sunday Assembly to be a house of love and compassion, where, no matter what your situation, you are welcomed, accepted and loved.

Most of all, have fun, be nice and join in.

BBC: What happens at an atheist church?

What happens at an atheist church?
BBC, 4 February 2013
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21319945

An "atheist church" in North London is proving a big hit with non-believers. Does it feel a bit like a new religion?

Alex's comment:  That seems to be what UUism has been doing: a religious community not requiring a particular creed/faith.  But an atheist church, compared with UUism, has the advantage of being more homogeneous and hence probably more cohesive.  這似乎就是UU一直在做的:一個不要求認信某宗教信經的宗教群體。但無神論「教會」,比起UU,參與者的信念更同質,因此內聚力或更強。

The non-religious Assembly is perhaps the fastest growing church in the world -- and it's coming to a mall near you

...For a number of years, Dodd—a lifelong atheist, apart from “a brief period as a young adult when I went looking for that something more”— had been a member of the Unitarian Universalist Community Church in Santa Monica. And for a while, he liked that well enough. “The Unitarian Church has this idea of ‘radical tolerance.’ It respects everything. It’s all good. Well that’s fine on one level, but at some point it becomes a little diluted.” Dodd was looking for a more robust secularism. In January, he caught word of the Sunday Assembly. A few months later, he was sitting across from Sanderson Jones at a pub in Hollywood, plotting the Assembly’s LA debut.  ...

Atheist ‘church’ in bid to raise £500,000
28 October 2013
http://www.christian.org.uk/news/atheist-church-in-bid-to-raise-500000

An atheist ‘church’ has launched a half-a-million pound fundraising drive to enable people to set up “Godless congregations” around the world.

The Sunday Assembly, which says its services are “all the best bits of church, but with no religion”, currently host gatherings where people listen to talks and sing songs.

It wants to raise £500,000 to set up and run a website helping people to organise their own assemblies around the world.  ...

Wanted: A Theology of Atheism
Molly Worthen

"...Yet the liberal notions of tolerance and freedom of conscience are not anodyne slogans; they are contentious issues. As nonbelievers tangle with traditional Christians over same-sex marriage and navigate conflicts between conservative Muslims and liberal democracy, they will need a confident humanist moral philosophy. The secular humanist liberation movement, in its zeal to win over religious America, should not encourage nonbelievers to turn away from their own intellectual heritage at the time when they will want it most."
